Encoding issue (question marks instead of accents)

Post by ESM »

Hi,
I'm having trouble at properly displaying characters with accents and don't understand where the problem may be. I haven't made any changes or preference adjustments to Oxygen (I'm a truly newbie here), so I'm not sure if the problem might be related with my computer. However, accents are properly displayed in other programs.

I'm using Oxygen 26.0 on a Linux Mint 21.1 computer, and this is what I'm seeing when starting a document from a TEI template:

However, it seems that my language configuration is OK:

Any ideas about what might be wrong? Any help will be much appreciated!

Hi,
This looks like a problem of font. Oxygen has no problems properly loading and saving non ASCII chars but if the characters themselves are not rendered, you may need to change the editing font in Oxygen to a font which can render such characters.
In the Oxygen Preferences->"Fonts" page there is an "Editor" font which when changed should reflect the change in the text editor area.

Hi Radu, thank you for your answer.
I have tried to change the font, checking the option to display only the fonts that properly display the sample text, but something is still wrong, because it seems that the checkmark doesn't make a difference:

Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Not sure what the problem could be, could you attach a small XML file containing these characters (without any confidential info inside it) to this thread? Or on our tech support form:
https://www.oxygenxml.com/techSupport.html
Maybe this sample file would give me more information and allow me to perform some tests on my side.
Or as an alternative if you place the caret right before such a character, Oxygen's status bar should display the character's unicode value like "U+0065" for example, what value does it display for such a character?

Hi Radu,
Thanks again for your answer. It seens I can't attach an xml file here, so I'm uploading it here, hoping it's useful to you. The badly rendered text should state "Això és una prova". I'll also fill the tech support form.
Regarding the Unicode value odf these characters, when I place the caret right before them, the value displayed is U+FFFD.

Thanks again!

Hi,
Oxygen XML Editor is officially supported and tested only on Ubuntu Linux. It may work well on other Linux platforms as well but officially we have not tested it on the Linux Mint platform.
We also received your video via email, I asked one of my colleagues to see if he can help you further with this.
We do not control how those characters that you type reach our application. Can you tell me about your keyboard layout? Did you set up your keyboard for a specific language where when you press a key or a combination of keys, those specific accented characters are inserted?
As an interesting experiment you could make, in the Oxygen main menu "Preferences"->"Global" page there is a "Default internet browser" text field. If you try to type the same accented characters there do you get the same problem with the FFFD characters being inserted instead?

Hi Radu,
Thanks again for the follow-up. I'm sorry this is a difficult issue to tackle.
I have a generic 105 key QWERTY keyboard for Spanish users, without any customization (picture). It has a specifc key for Ñ and Ç (which render properly in Oxygen), and to write an accentuated character, I first type the accent key (next to P and Ñ) and then the letter that has to be accentuated. In case it's useful to you, here you have a paste of the output of the inxi -Fxxxrz command from my terminal
Regarding the test you suggested, I get the same rendering problems in the "default internet browser" text field of the Preferences menu.

Thank you for your time!

Hi,

What my colleague is asking is what keyboard layout setting (and perhaps input method) are you using in Linux Mint (OS setting):
https://divvun.no/no/keyboards/userdocs ... xMint.html
From what you're describing it seems to be a composite input method which isn't recognized by Java.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The layout is "Spanish Catalan, L with interpunct" and looks like this:

Hi,
As a followup we added an internal issue to look into this, pasting the issue id below for future reference:
EXM-54548 Problem with Linux Mint and Spanish layout keyboard
But for now we are not sure how we could fix this issue on our side, this does not seem to be something that our application controls.

Thank you!
I understand Linux Mint users are a small cohort, but hope that this will eventually be solved eventually. Thank you for your time!
