The importance attribute

The relative importance or priority of a content element is recorded in the importance attribute. Elements with a higher priority may be highlighted in the output.

Most DITA content elements include the importance attribute. You can use this attribute to indicate the relative importance of an element, such as a step, in its broader context.

Valid values for the importance attribute are:
  • obsolete
  • deprecated
  • optional
  • default
  • low
  • normal
  • high
  • recommended
  • required
  • urgent

Some publishing tools may highlight elements with a higher priority in some way. For example, in a task topic, link elements (in the related-links section) marked with an importance attribute value of required will be rendered in the pre-requisites section in the output.
